Some Maximal Subgroups of Infinite Symmetric Groups

THIS paper concerns maximal subgroups of symmetric groups on infinite, usually countable, sets. Our main aim is to give examples of maximal subgroups which could claim to be almost stabilisers of familiar combinatorial structures. We emphasise that maximal subgroup always means maximal proper subgroup. Throughout this paper, Cl will denote an infinite set, usually countable. The power set of Q ...

Chow Groups of Some Generically Twisted Flag Varieties

We classify the split simple affine algebraic groups G of types A and C over a field with the property that the Chow group of the quotient variety E/P is torsion-free, where P ⊂ G is a special parabolic subgroup (e.g., a Borel subgroup) and E is a generic G-torsor (over a field extension of the base field). Examples of G include the adjoint groups of type A. Examples of E/P include the Severi-B...

Embeddings of Symmetric Varieties

We generalize to the case of a symmetric variety the construction of the enveloping semigroup of a semisimple algebraic group due to E.B. Vinberg, and we establish a connection with the wonderful completion of the associated adjoint symmetric variety due to C. De Concini and C.

Some Abelian Varieties with Visible Shafarevich-Tate Groups

We give examples of abelian variety quotients of the modular jacobian J0(N) with nontrivial visible Shafarevich-Tate groups. In computing these examples we developed formulas for invariants of higher dimensional modular abelian varieties.

A New Characterization of Some Alternating and Symmetric Groups

We suppose that p = 2α3β +1, where α ≥ 1, β ≥ 0, and p ≥ 7 is a prime number. Then we prove that the simple groups An, where n = p,p+1, or p+2, and finite groups Sn, where n = p,p+1, are also uniquely determined by their order components. As corollaries of these results, the validity of a conjecture of J. G. Thompson and a conjecture of Shi and Bi (1990) both on An, where n= p,p+1, or p+2, is o...
